Eastcoin Latin America Collection

KM-105. Variety with tip of cross between "H" and "I". Despite the noted cleaning, a great example from early in the reign of Charles III and offering solid detail remaining as well.

This is one of a series struck 1760-71 during the reign of Charles III (1759-88). An overdate is noted for the year, 1762/1. The overdate is rare, as well as the legend variety with the cross between "I" and "S" but the normal date is common.

Mexican numismatists hotly debate which side of the coin constitutes the obverse. Gilboy depicts the shield side as the obverse as that side bears the king's name. However, auction catalogs and dealer listings more frequently use the pillars and globes side as the obverse, as that side bears the date.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 27.07 grams, .917 fine silver, .798 troy oz ASW.

Catalog reference: Cayón-11906, Gilboy M-8-40, KM 105.
