GERMANY. Empire. Bismarck's 80th Birthday Silver Medal, 1895. Berlin (Oertel) Mint. PCGS SPECIMEN-64.

Bennert-163. Diameter: 28mm. Obverse: Bust of Bismarck right, wearing hat; perimeter legend, star below bust; Reverse: View of Bismarck's home in Friedrichsruh, legend above; Edge: Reeded. Bismarck had a fraught relationship with Kaiser Wilhelm II; Wilhelm demanded Bismarck's resignation in 1890. Bismarck reluctantly entered into retirement and began composing his memoires. By his 80th birthday his health was in decline, and he would die some three years later. This medal depicts the aged and retired former chancellor with a well-executed depiction of his home in situ. Reflective fields offer an array of pleasing hues. Attractive.

Provenance: From the Tim Gabriele Collection.
