Description
1837 Great Britain Queen Victoria "To Hanover" Historical Copper Token
Offered for sale is an attractive 1837 Queen Victoria "To Hanover" token commemorating the beginning of Queen Victoria's reign and the separation of the British and Hanoverian crowns.
Historical Background
When Queen Victoria succeeded King William IV in 1837, she became Queen of Great Britain. However, Hanover followed Salic succession laws that prevented a woman from inheriting its throne. Consequently, Victoria's uncle, Ernest Augustus, became King of Hanover, ending the personal union between Britain and Hanover that had existed since 1714.
The famous "To Hanover" tokens are associated with this important historical transition.
Obverse:
Features a left-facing portrait of the young Queen Victoria surrounded by the inscription "VICTORIA REGINA."
Reverse:
Features a mounted figure above a dragon-like creature, with the inscription "TO HANOVER" and the date 1837.
