Numismatic Market Brief
October 5, 2026
This week’s market favors exceptional quality, strong eye appeal and verified population rarity, while rapid precious-metal movements demand closer attention to bullion-related pricing.
Precious metals remained volatile after September 28. Gold fell as much as 4% to approximately $4,111 per ounce before recovering to about $4,152 on October 5. Silver advanced approximately 1.9% to $61.53 per ounce.
This matters most for bullion coins, common-date gold and silver coins, and other pieces whose value is closely tied to melt. A fixed price that looked reasonable a few days earlier can quickly become too cheap—or too expensive for buyers.
Exceptional world and ancient coins command strong prices
Recently reported Stack’s Bowers results demonstrate that buyers remain aggressive for genuinely rare, visually compelling and historically important pieces:
- A toned NGC PF64★ Cameo Gothic Crown realized $134,200.
- An NGC MS62 1607 Spanish 4 Escudos brought $189,100.
- A rare 1830 Manila overstrike 8 Reales realized $91,500.
- A Caligula aureus sold for $97,600 against a $60,000 high estimate.
- The complete Summer Global Showcase exceeded $70 million.
The important distinction is selectivity: these results support premium-quality, toned, top-pop and story-rich coins. They do not indicate that all ordinary world coins are rising.
Top-pop U.S. coins remain powerful
The Mack C. Chase Collection of Walking Liberty half dollars realized nearly $2.45 million. A PCGS MS66 1921-D reached $183,000, while the sole-finest PCGS MS67 1917-D reverse-mintmark issue brought $122,000. Multiple other finest-known pieces established records.
The results reinforce the premium buyers place on verified census rarity, superior preservation and registry-level quality.
Whatnot calculates fee tiers separately for each account
Whatnot clarified on October 1 that each seller account earns its own commission tier. Sales across multiple accounts cannot be combined. Coin commission presently ranges from 4% down to 3.5%, excluding payment-processing charges, depending on four-week sales volume.
The additional Premier Shop commission discount remains available only through October 31, 2026. Beginning November 1, commission is determined by the seller’s earned tier without the extra Premier Shop reduction.

Grading and eBay policy watch
No consequential new NGC, PCGS or eBay policy change was verified during this reporting period. Sellers should continue checking certification records, documenting population claims and reviewing marketplace fee details before listing expensive coins.
