Historical Background

The story of Araucania and Patagonia began in 1860, when French adventurer Orélie-Antoine de Tounens proclaimed a kingdom in parts of southern Chile and Argentina.

Although the proposed kingdom never achieved international recognition as an independent country, its claimants continued the royal tradition.

Philippe Boiry, known as Felipe I, claimed succession to the throne in 1952 and remained associated with the movement until his death in 2014.

Fantasy coins such as this 1989 Soberan were created as commemorative and numismatic issues rather than circulating legal tender.

These unusual pieces appeal to collectors of fantasy coinage, micronations, South American historical issues, and privately issued commemoratives.
