Historical Background
Wang Mang established the Xin Dynasty in 9 AD, ending the Western Han Dynasty's rule. His brief reign was characterized by ambitious political, economic, and monetary reforms.
The Huo Quan coinage was introduced in 14 AD as part of Wang Mang's currency reforms. The inscription 货泉 translates approximately to "Currency Spring" or "Source of Money."
These coins feature distinctive ancient Chinese seal-script characters arranged around a square central hole, a classic feature of traditional Chinese cash coinage.
The Xin Dynasty collapsed in 23 AD following widespread rebellions and political instability. Wang Mang was killed during the fall of his capital.
