Historical Significance
The Chongzhen Emperor ascended the throne in 1627 during a period of severe political and economic instability in imperial China.
His reign was marked by financial difficulties, peasant rebellions, military threats, and the weakening of Ming imperial authority.
In 1644, the Ming capital of Beijing fell to rebel forces, and the Chongzhen Emperor died, marking the collapse of the Ming government in Beijing and paving the way for the Qing Dynasty.
Chongzhen Tongbao coins are tangible artifacts of this dramatic final chapter of the Ming Dynasty.
