Historical Background
The Kingdom of Araucania and Patagonia was proclaimed in 1860 by French adventurer Orélie-Antoine de Tounens, who sought to establish a monarchy in parts of southern South America.
Although the kingdom never achieved lasting international recognition as an independent state, its unusual history has attracted the interest of collectors of world coins, fantasy issues, and historical exonumia.
This 1989 issue commemorates the kingdom's continuing royal tradition and features Felipe P. on the obverse, with a map of the region and royal coat of arms on the reverse.
